I was in love.  My new husband and I were moving into our first home.  Even in 1978 the house was a bargain in Muscoy, CA–$25,000 for a three-bedroom home, an incredible price, almost as incredible as the story hidden beneath the knotty-pine walls.  A little research might have revealed the truth, but I don’t’ know if we‘d have passed this by had we been informed. My husband was a pragmatic, sensible sort, and he loved that knotty pine. The kitchen was sunny and warm, but I felt an urge to lighten the rest of the house from the start. The long living room was difficult to arrange and it seemed people avoided the back part of it which felt colder, unwelcoming. The hallway sent a chill up my spine many times.  In the dark of the night I dreaded walking it.  There was no light.  Sometimes I’d catch myself scampering to get past it, but I had time to make it perfect for us, after all, this was our own new home on Duffy Street.

A grisly murder had happened in the house in the early 70’s and earthbound spirits remained in possession.  I was barely aware of my psychic gift at this time and knew nothing of being a medium.  I didn’t know how to clear energy or how to protect myself and my loved ones.   Also, I didn’t know that unwanted spirits can attach to just about anyone. Children and sensitive people (like psychics and mediums) are more open.  Entities feed on vulnerability.

Others who might be prone to psychic interference include people who are unconscious or experience trauma, when under anesthesia in surgery, or receive a blow to the head, blood transfusions, and when drunk or drugged. Traumatic childhood experiences such as abuse, rape, or incest can open entity attachment. Severe stress, sexual ecstasy, exhaustion, grief, extreme anger, fear or guilt can act like a magnet that creates an open door for a spirit intruder. When the front door is ajar any spirit nearby can walk in without warning or knowledge of invasion.

My 4 year old daughter Theresa began to have “imaginary” friends shortly after we moved into the Duffy Street house, and she was afraid to be in her room which happened to be the only room with its doorway leading into the hall. We chose this room for her because it was directly across from the bathroom. Theresa would wake up at night emphatically stating that her bed was shaking.

A few years later we had over night guests, the younger children were excited because they were to have a special treat. Theresa said they could spend the night in her room. That night, Theresa’s bed began to shake worse than it usually did. Theresa woke up, and listening to the sound of her sister’s snores, tried to find her way to the door by touching the walls.  The room had changed and soon, she ended up by her bed again. Standing by her bed drowsy and puzzled Theresa turned towards the dresser. What she saw stopped her in her tracks! A tiny woman, about five inches tall stood on her dresser! At first Theresa couldn’t understand what the little woman was trying to say, “Help. Help me.” the young woman repeated, the words were not coming from her mouth—they seemed to be coming from her throat which seemed to have been cut. Jumping back in bed, covering her head with a blanket, Theresa screamed, until I ran into the room and turned on the light. “Mommy, her daddy cut her throat and there is not any blood on her clothes!  She is really pretty, and all dressed up like she is going to a party. Her hair is long and brown and is swept up on top of her head. She says her daddy killed her! Theresa breathlessly and tearfully wails. I had a hard time calming her, and when she did finally go to sleep Theresa tossed and turned muttering in her sleep.

The next day, Theresa insisted her bedroom used to be the kitchen before the house was changed and we had knotty pine walls because the blood would not come off the walls, and that if the carpet was lifted there would be blood stains on the floor.

When I spoke with the neighbors, I found out my daughter’s “horrific nightmare” was much more than a bad dream, she had seen and heard a spirit. Ruby, our neighbor lived across the street for twenty years. Ruby shared with me what she knew about our home. The house had indeed been changed. Theresa’s bedroom had originally been the kitchen and the murder of the young girl was a fact. The murderer was an abusive alcoholic. This man had custody of his teenaged daughter and two young sons. The young woman had made plans to go to her homecoming dance but when her father came home from the bar, he informed her she was not going. An argument ensued. The dad in an alcoholic rage beat the young 17 year old teenager and sliced her throat. This happened sometime in the 70’s and we moved into the house a few years after the murder in 1978. By the way, when we had the carpet removed there was a brown stain on the floor. Who knows, maybe it was the blood of the young girl.

When writing my auto biography, I realized the spirit of the murderer in our home had attached itself to my husband who was not a believer of the supernatural. It took about a year, our first year in the house for the entity to seize control over my husband. I helplessly watched this stranger I was married to became more aggressive and physically abusive. The abuse normally occurred in the back part of the living room, in the hall and in my daughter’s bedroom. I assumed it was because of his drinking—today I know better.  When he got sober five years later, the attachment stayed as it had become very much a part of who my husband had become. The physical abuse now became sporadic. Over the years I got very good at lets ignore and pretend that everything was fine.   It wasn’t fine and I didn’t know how to fix it.

The night before Theresa graduated high school, violence erupted as Theresa was slammed against the bedroom wall. Hearing the commotion I ran into the room as my husband began to choke my daughter. Fearing for my daughter’s life, I interceded and the violence shifted into a verbal argument between my husband and me. The day after Theresa’s graduation I packed the house, put the kids in the car and left.

Looking back over these traumatic years I began to see the synchronicity between the murderer and my husband. Both the murderer and my husband were alcoholics who enjoyed going to the neighborhood bar, the murderer was abusive, my husband became abusive. Like us the murderer had three children the oldest a girl. The girl’s throat was slashed, my husband was a choker, and both girls were seventeen when the abuse stopped.

An earth bound spirit is a common form of attachment. This spirit is drawn to unite with the living, and does not know they have died.  They usually attach themselves to a person who is most like them. Earthbound spirits stay on earth and remain as they were before they died retaining all the fears, weaknesses and problems they had while alive. Occasionally an attachment can occur when an organ transplant is performed because the deceased is harvested with the organ.

Because of these experiences I’m amazed to discover that some Spiritualists and new age white lighters claim that low level entities cannot “possess” anyone unless that person invites them in to do so. This has not been my experience.

The spirit is the part of us that survives after death. A person who does evil has a spirit and an energy vibration. Lower level spirits have a low frequency while an enlightened spirit who was kind and loving in life vibrates at a higher level. A low level spirit evolves slowly. As in life the person who is angry and holds resentments emanates different energy frequencies, which often times can be felt by others in the form of bad vibes or discomfort.

Those with inflated egos, liars, cheaters and murderers don’t suddenly transform their personality into a marvelous illuminated being of goodness and light, when they die the personality stays the same except there is not a physical body to hamper them.

In ancient cultures Spirit Possession was an essential method of connecting to the divine during religious or spiritual ceremonies and rituals. Spirit Possession may be a temporary altering of the medium’s consciousness, to allow an entity to enter into their body to communicate directly with others, such as I do when I am trance channeling. A spirit possession is the mental or physical attachment of a consciousness to another person. Spirit attachment does not require the permission of the host; and they do not have a logical purpose to attach. In most cases attached spirits don’t have any ill-will and they mean no harm.

The same energy that brings in Grandma Sally and Uncle Bob is the same energy that brings in entities that do not have your best welfare at heart. When performing a Mediumship session the channeler is protected and not at risk because the shielding and protection have been built around them like a castle and a moat. Protection is paying attention to the nearby energy. Lack of focus and awareness is a set up for spirit attachments. People who do not know to shield their energy will open the energetic channel unintentionally allowing the spirit in. Such practices as automatic writing, channeling, Mediumship, using an Ouija board or being present at a séance are open invitations for possession. Once an entity gains entry, a “hole” in the aura is created, making room for more attachments.

Often times it is difficult to halt the activity and remove the spirit because it will jump from one host to another including the household pets.

When a spirit is attracted to a living person it begins to feel safe and “hangs out” with them, becoming a parasite to the host. Often the person, who is affected, will have a hidden attachment to being possessed and will be unwilling to relinquish the entity. The key signs of a spirit attachment might be accident proneness, sleep disorders, unexplained weight gain, depression, chronic fatigue, gender confusion, thoughts and actions which are out of character for the host who might even be misdiagnosed with mental disorders such as schizophrenia and bi-polar personalities.

For those who are sensitive it is important to abstain from mood altering chemicals which actually opens the energy field creating susceptibility to an entity attachment.  Possession is very gradual and can blend with our personalities. Being unaware, life remains reasonably normal until an event or situation triggers or annoys the attached spirit, then it is as if something seems to “command” the thinking and/or body functions of the living person. Unless something drastic happens shortly after a spirit attachment the host may remain unaware of the changes happening within, especially if received as a child. Often it is the loved ones who sense something different in the host.

Spirit Release and extractions are a form of spiritual healing used to clear attachments and negative energies. Many Shamans and Energetic Light Workers offer this service to assist in the release of anything that can be described as an unhealthy negative attachment. Spirit release therapy unlike an exorcism performed in a loving kind way. Both the host and the entity are treated with gentleness and compassion. Many times after the spirit release the host will feel empty and will need to grieve the loss of their unwanted friend.
